Meet the Worker Bees! July 14, 2008

The Wool Shack consists of 3 hardworking, compulsive obessive knitters (a dangerous combination).  I’d like to introduce you to them, so that should you ever have the pleasure of talking to them (via the old fashioned telephone method or email), you can put a face to the name!

Emma (that’s me!).  I am the owner of The Wool Shack, and have been knitting since I was about 7 years old, although didn’t really get serious until I was a teenager and started making my own clothes.  I have 3 small boys, Joe, Luka & Charlie and am expecting my fourth child (a girl this time!!) the end of September 2008!  Before you ask, yes, I do make time for knitting, although my ironing pile always seems to suffer as a result!  Ah well!

Jemma (TWS Manager) is pretty much the back bone of The Wool Shack and shares my passion for the business, as well as knitting.  I am very proud to say that I have led her over to the dark side of knitting, although it has taken years to get her there.  Once a knitter who owned very little stash (what’s a stash! she would say) and only started a new project when she had completed her current one, she now has a small stash (still doesn’t touch mine, although perhaps that’s not something I should be proud of!) and a couple of WIP’s!  The mother to twin 6 year old boys makes for a busy home life!  She’s a great knittter and very organised and The Wool Shack would slow to a halt without her!

Kathleen is our newest member, starting work in early May 2008!  Kathleen also suffers from Jemma’s ‘lack of stash’ ailment, but at least we get to see finished projects (mine are always ‘nearly there’).  Kathleen has two children and a busy home life, but all three of us find time to knit where we can.

mmmm – I suffer stash syndrome too – I am now onto my 2nd big plastic tub. I have just got a young dog who loves wool so have had to put them up high now so she doesn’t run off with the balls in her mouth.

I too am a stasher. I live in rural NSW and so buy a lot of my yarn online. Our neighbour who collects our mail has suggested that I get a 20ft container instead of a 44gal drum to collect all my craft parcels. I have a 40ft container which contains 6 x100ltr containers of yarn, colour coded and ply coded. I have another container of work in project. I must say, at 70, I am considerably older than TWS staff members and so have had many years start on you all. I dont drive so get heaps done whilst a passenger when on 150k shopping trips to town for supplies.
The blog is a great idea
    Happy Knitting to all
    Meg

I always feel so welcome at wool shack. The personal touch of the website is what brings me back. Now to have a face to the email is a new level of the great service. Thank you & best wishes.

  4. I’ve loved getting my yarn from you guys over the past year, so thanks for being my Oz-yarn connection. When I first moved here about five yrs ago I had trouble finding a place that sold the kind of yarn that:

    a) makes one drool
    b) made me have to set up a piggy bank fund for lush stuff to knit with, and
    c) made me feel there were ‘others’ out there in Australia who understood my need for yarn, and not just any kind of yarns.

Now that I’ve hit middle age and am not traveling as much as I used to, I’m designing knitwear and you are providing me with the right stuff to put my ideas together as well as build a very yummy stash;)
    Good luck with your blogging.
    Renee

How I can relate to the Stash!! At 76 and knitting since I was 5, I have accumulated so many needles, yarn and a few UFO’s. ( I am endeavouring to finish those). But how can I? I am addicted to beginning new things all the time. Arthritic hands mean that I can only knit with circular needles now, but I can still knit, that’s the main thing. I have to say though, I loathe sewing up garments, I wish there was a genie I could conjure up to do that for me.

    Hi Emma,
    what a great website :-)
thought you may be interested to hear we have opened up an alpaca fleece processing plant here in Toodyay WA
We make both yarn and felt from west australian alpaca fleece.
Yes, we call our mini mill “The Fibre of the Gods” and now that we can process this wonderful fibre, more and more of us get to work with it and and wear it.
    Happy knitting
    Hazel and Michael

hi all, nice to meet fellow yarnsters! Following our emigration from the UK in 2006, my husband has ‘allowed’ me to bring my stash out of hiding and it is now ‘on show’ in one of the spare bedrooms. I just love all the fantastic shades, textures and weights that are available now and spend hours imagining the lush projects that could be on the needles. I love the reaction I get from friends when they first see my stash in the containers, but when they get their hands on the yarn most are hooked and want to learn how to knit immediately.
I have held a number of knitting groups, teaching children and adults, but it is frustrating not having a yarn store I can take them to as I used to be a member of several knitting groups in UK and they were held in the wool shop, I always spent way too much money those days!
If anyone is interested in setting up or joining a Knit ‘n Natter in the northern suburbs of Perth (Joondalup, Clarkson area), please let me know. Its a really good way to discuss new yarns, books, patterns and learn new methods. my email is karen_rigby@hotmail.com
    chicks – knit on!
    Karen
