Join Our French Press Felted Slippers Knit-Along! October 23, 2009

As Christmas is right around the corner (eeekkk!) we thought it would be a fab idea to run a knit-along for a great

slippers2500

quick knit that makes for a fantastic and stylish Chrissie Pressie for the ones you love (or yourself!).   These French Press Felted Slippers are truly unique in their elegance (nice and feminine, without being too bulky) and the ability to dress up or dress down with a lovely selection of buttons is just too good to be true.

The pattern can be bought from French Press Knits on Etsy, or, if you are on Ravelry, you can buy the pattern from the Ravelry Downloads for French Press Felted Slippers.

Once you have the pattern, all you need is the yarn, needles and buttons for the slippers.  We are going to use Cascade 220, or Malabrigo Worsted Merino, of which you will need 2 balls, and 10mm needles (when you felt yarn, you knit it up really loose, then shrink it down in the washing machine), plus two buttons of your choice (we have a fine selection in store at the moment!) and I think I will go for some nice big leather buttons!

For our Knit-along, you don’t have to buy the yarn from us, or the buttons, or the needles in fact!  Just grab the pattern, get yourself a 100% wool (superwash won’t felt) 10ply/worsted weight wool and lets get knitting.

What we DO want from you are progress shots, as we’ll create a montage of during and after slippers.  EMAIL us to let us know you would like to join the knit-along, and then we’ll contact you to see how you’re going and gather a few piccys from you to post on the blog.

It’ll be fun, and it’s easy to get hooked on small projects, hence planning this one in plenty of time to get a few pairs knit for Christmas Presents.

Would love to give it a go. In our family this Christmas we’re only allowed to give hand-made presents, so this should be great for some people!

  7. Melynda Says:

Well this explains the sudden influx of pattern sales (especially to Australian customers!). How exciting to see my pattern being done as a KAL! I will be following closely and eagerly awaiting the photos. Thanks so much, if there are any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. You can find me on Ravelry and Etsy as FrenchPressKnits, or email at frenchpressknits [!at] yahoo.com

I love felting and knitting count me in Kerri

  13. Donna Collings Says:

I bought the pattern and emailed Melynda for some clarification. She was fantastic!

Oops… I didn’t know we needed progress shots. I have just felted my second pair and they are drying as I type.

I am using Naturally Alpine 10 ply yarn and it seems to take forever to get through the felting process but the end result is worth the 5 or 6 heavy duty washes in the machine.

I have decided to add felted flowers and leaves as embellishment to these little cuties and I will reinforce the sole with kid suede leather.

This has been my first stab at felting and I am really enjoying it.

I will send pics when I have finished the 3 pairs of slippers I am making.

Never felted before This is my first go. Have knitted all my life.. Any suggestions for a substitute yarn in Australia???? Thanks…

    • behindthewoolshack Says:

      Hi Marie

We will be using Cascade 220 or Malabrigo Worsred Merino. Basically any 10ply 100% wool (not superwash) should work!

      Good luck

    • Donna Collings Says:

      Hi Marie

I am in Perth and I find almost anything is available on the internet.

I am using Naturally Alpine 10 ply, a NZ wool (I always feel guilty when I knit with non-Aussie wool) and it was readily available in local wool shops.

Bendigo Mills have a 10 ply feltable wool and you can have any colour as long as it is cream.

      Happy knitting

  15. Helene Says:

Hi, count me in too. I am aiming for completion this Christmas. Bought my yarn from Bendigo Woollen Mills, Rustic 12ply I hope this was correct? I hope I haven’t created my first stumbling block.
Love the idea of felted flowers Donna, look forward to seeing your slippers.

    • marie klausen Says:

Hi Everyone thanks for your reply.. Looking forward to getting started….Helene, did you mean to write 12ply?? I thought we had to get 10 ply…Umm let me know..cheers marie.

      • Helene Says:

Hi Marie. Thanks Emma for sorting us out. I bought 12ply because I thought worsted meant 12ply. I have size 11 feet so maybe the 12ply will work for me if I stick with the same needles. I will defintely need to do a tension square if I am to have any chance of these slippers fitting my flippers.

  16. marie klausen Says:

Hello Am i going potty….??? THe pattern says 10 ply.. You say to use cascade 220.. which i s 12ply???? ummmmmmmmm HElp…
which is it . 10 ply or 12ply???? Thanksssssssssss… Me thinks i am going to have heaps big slipppers grin… Look forward to hearing from you..

      Hi Ladies

to be honest, it won’t make a HUGE difference, and there is a bit of ‘grey’ area around what a 10 and 12ply are!

With felting, it won’t be an issue, the thing to look for is the tension, ie, 18 sts to 10cm. Even if its a bit chunkier (16sts to 10 cm) that will still work, and you can always go down 1/4-1/2 a needle size if you are worried.

      Hope that helps
      Emma

  17. marie klausen Says:

THanks so much for the speedy reply…
I feel much betterererererer now…Will get my yarn and needles out..
    Have a great day…

  18. behindthewoolshack Says:

  19. Mira Says:

Wow, I’ve just knitted mine up and they are ENORMOUS!!! Will have to felt them by hand because I don’t have a top loading washing machine – let you know how I go!

  20. Joy Lock Says:

The first pair I knitted, I couldnt get them to felt, I think the wool was not 100% wool, so bought the feltable wool from Spotlight and they have turned out great. Just have the buttons to put on and then I will take a picture. Will definitely make another pair.

  21. Mania Says:

    Hi girls!
I bought the pattern many days ago and I am waiting for your photos in order to start. I could not follow you from the beginning
